To be socially responsible today means going beyond separating your garbage into plastic, paper and waste. It’s more than being environmentally conscious and reducing your carbon footprint. Now it extends to investments.
What is socially responsible investing?
Originally socially responsible investors avoided investing in companies that produced alcohol, tobacco and firearms. Today, the concept has extended to the investment in “green” companies or those that support the environment.
Which companies are green?
Many green companies are in industries that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, such as wind and solar. General Electric (GE), for example, is involved in wind power. First Solar (FSLR) and Sunpower (SPWR) produce solar modules and systems.
Due to climate change there is concern about conserving the world’s fresh water supply. It is reported that in 2018 Cape Town, South Africa was close to running dry until conservation restrictions were put into effect. One green company, American Water (AWK) collects, purifies and distributes water. It is the largest in the U.S. supplying drinking water to 14 million people.
Green transportation is a rapidly developing industry. Companies like Tesla (TSLA), General Motors (GM) and Nissan (NSANY) are supplying the market with electric cars. China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is the world’s largest producer of batteries for electric vehicles.
Green companies are also found in the recycling and organic food industries. The latter group avoids the use of pesticides in growing its products.
Will green companies put green in your wallet?
Over the long term, investing in green companies should be rewarding. Governments around the world are focused on climate change. Germany, for example, plans to move entirely from coal to renewable energy by 2038. Environmental concerns are affecting consumer choice. China is now the largest manufacturer and buyer of electric vehicles in the world.
The head of Equity Strategy for Saxo Bank stated in a report that “Governments will increase investments and subsidies for ‘green’ industries, starting a new mega trend in equity markets.”
